One of the most famous tourist spots of Karnataka is the beautiful hill station Madikeri which is also called as Kodagu. The hill station city has a lot of amazing high spots, water falls as well as monuments and also temples which are uniquely built. The lush green forest area and the vast coffee plantation, the foggy hill side views are the true identity of this dazzling city. Madikeri is also known as the coffee capital of Karnataka. It generally has a cool and pleasant climatic condition but the best time to visit the city would be from November to April to avoid the rains. December and January are usually the coolest months of the year.
1. Abbey Falls
The silvery white cascade of water falling from in between the coffee plantations is Abbey falls which is a small part of the Cauvery River water falling from a height of 70 feet. There is a small hanging bridge near the falls to enjoy the view to its best. The falls were also known as Jessi falls named after the wife of a British officer, back then it was surrounded by thick forest. The place was later found by the government after which the area was cultivated into a coffee plant estate.
Best Time to visit: The best time to visit this falls is during the monsoon when the water is gushing in a heavy amount from that height.
Things to see: The view and the picturesque sight of the falls are at it’s the prime at this time of the year. The beautiful mesmerizing view of this falls will definitely leave an impact on your heart.
Things to do: You can spend a few hours here to admire the beauty of this gift of nature. The place is also a picnic spot. The destination is reached after a small walk through the coffee and cardamom plantations.

2. Namdroling Monastery
Also known as the Golden Temple, Namdroling Monastery is a monastery dedicated to all the Buddhist followers. The temple is home to an 18-meter tall Statue of Buddha which is gold plated. The monastery is one of the teaching centres of a lineage of the Tibetan Buddhism. The children are also taught the preaching outside the temple. The description of different phases of the life of Lord Buddha are represented in the paintings which are displayed in the temple. These painting also give a good outlook on the culture of Buddhism.
Best time to visit: The monastery timings are from 7 am to 8 pm.
Things to do: One can spend some time meditating inside the hall and admire the beautiful statues and the paintings also the sacred text that are on the wall. The places are worth spending a few hours, there are also shops on the outside, so one can do their souvenir shopping here as well.
3. Raja’s Seat
Raja’s seat is a beautiful spot for a breath-taking view of the sun setting into the undulated mountains. Raja’s seat is a seasonal garden with a variety of flowers that are nurtured here. These gardens also accompanied by the fountains. This was a spot for the kings to have their time off in relaxing and spending some time in relishing the beauty of nature. This place was considered to be a recreational spot for the kings with a view of the cliffs and the valleys.
Best time to visit: The ideal time needed to visit and enjoy this place is about an hour, and best enjoyed during the sunset and can be visited in any season.
Things to do: One can spend a peaceful amount of time in enjoying the view of the place and have the royal feel just that the kings enjoyed amidst nature. The place also has a ride for children basically but also enjoyed by the adults.

4. Chelavara Falls
A beautiful outpour of the tributary of the river Cauvery is the Chelavara falls. To reach the falls one has to walk through the forest from the parking. The falls was found near one of the highest points in Madikeri, Thadiyandamol. The water falls from the height 150 feet into a big pool of water. The stones on the top, from where the water cascades out are in the shape of the tortoise and hence are also called as Embepare.
Best time to visit: The best time to visit the falls is during monsoon. The enchanting view of the falls is totally consuming.
Things to do: Spend a worthwhile time in enjoying the beauty and the elegance of the beautiful falls
Tips: But one needs to be very careful when walking towards the falls, the water is very deep and the places with the danger signs should be avoided since the places has seen a number deaths in the past. Entering the water is totally not advisable.
Talacauvery is a holy place, which holds a sacred water bath. This point is considered to be the starting point of the river Cauvery also called as Kaveri. A tank has been built up on the hillside by Kodavas. There is also a small shrine that represents the holiness of this spot. The river is said to originate from here in the form spring. People take bath in this water on special occasions and festivals.
Best time to visit: the place can be visited at any time on any day within 6 am to 8 pm
Things to do: The shrine is dedicated to “kaveriamma” there is a flight of 365 steps which leads to the top of the hill. Climbing up the stairs one can feel the “walk into the clouds” for real. The beautiful view of the mountains will totally capture your heart. There is also an interesting mythological story behind the origin of this spring. One can spend about 2-3 hrs in this place and also take bath in the bath if allowed on the day.
6. Cauvery Nisargadhama
Cauvery Nisargadhama is a favourite picnic spot of all times. This interesting spot is the house to the deer park, peacock park, rabbit park and adding to it is the river in between. The place is totally worth a visit. The Place is especially enjoyed by kids.
Best time to visit: Can be visited in any season and any time of the year
Things to do: One can take a dip in the water and also opt for the boating ride. The time spent here amidst the lush green and the other members of the beautiful nature is totally worth and relaxing. This is totally a must visit in the city.
7. Madikeri Fort
The fort is one of the most attractive tourist spots in Madikeri which also hold the stories from the past of the city. The historical fort is a magnificent remnant of the era that has passed. Bhagamandala is Located on the bank of Sangama, that is where the three river Cauvery, Kannike and the sub Terrain Sujyoti meet. It is a pilgrimage centre which holds a number of shrines in the premises of the Bhagamandala Kshetra. The worshippers take a dip in the water and perform the ancestral ritual proceedings. The temple is a very old structure which was made by Cholas before the 11th century.
Best time to visit: Temple can be visited on any days from morning 7 am to evening 7 pm.
Things to do: Since it is a temple, after worshipping in the shrines one can take a dip in the flowing Sangama water. Bhagamandala and Mt Koppatti is also a splendid trekking route for all the sight Wanderers and also the photographers who wish to capture the beautiful sceneries.
9. Omkareshwara Temple
Dedicated to Lord Shiva, Omkareshawara temple is a blend of Gothic and Islamic styles of architecture. The mixed architectures have always been pieces of an amazing structure with the eye catching beauty. The Shivalinga kept in this temple was brought by the king from the Land of Kashi. The temple is a peaceful and simple structure.
Best time to visit: the temple can be visited at any time in the morning and evening, but takes a break from 12 noon to 5 pm and closes at 8 pm.
Things to do: the temple is an architectural marvel. One can admire the beautiful structure of the temple and spend some time in the spirituality of the temple.
10. Dubare Elephant Training Camp
This training camp near Madikeri carries out a lot of activities for the sake of the wild elephants and also the other species of animals. The government established this with the help of the Tribal people in the local area. There are also different kinds of birds found here like Kingfisher, peacocks, woodpecker. This is one of the most loved areas of Madikeri.
Best time to visit: can be visited only on the weekdays, from 8:30 to 5:30,
Things to do: there are joy rides on the elephants available here. Not only are people allowed to take the rides but also scrub the elephants and also feed them.
